Car to be at auction 6/19

www.luckyoldcar.com/uncategorized/lot-410-1973-jaguar-xj-6-no-reserve/

Auction description:

1973 Jaguar XJ 6

VIN# UD1L72326 BW

Miles Shown: 28086

Engine: 4.2 liter Inline 6 cylinder W/ 2 Zenith-Stromberg side draft carburetors

Transmission: Borg Warner 3 speed automatic

Color Silver

This Jaguar is a very solid car overall. It has been repainted in its original silver color and the paint looks pretty good. We wish to point out that we found the car had some prior damage to the rear area at some point and left side of the spare tire well and to the rear valance. The valance also has is showing some rust. The floors and rocker panels look to be solid. The hood, trunk lid and doors look very good as well. The bumpers and exterior trim are in good condition and the chrome wheels look good.

The original Red leather seats and door panels are in good condition. The carpet under the Jaguar floor mats is showing wear. The wood trimmed dash looks very good and the switches and gauges are in nice shape. The gas gauge is not working the oil gauge is slow to respond. It looks like the oil gauge issue may be a sender problem.

The radio works and the power windows work. The headliner is in good condition. The lights work but the floor switch for low/high beam doesn’t work. The passenger front seat belt/shoulder belt is stuck fully extended- needs a retractor to correct the issue.

The engine starts and runs well with no unusual noises or issues. It has some minor oil leakage (British) but nothing major. The battery is a newly reconditioned unit. The transmission shifts properly and no slipping or abnormal noises were noticed. It does leak some and probably needs external seals and pan gasket. The brakes operate with no visible leaks. The pads still have life left on front and rear.

The tires are size P215/70R15. The tread and appearance are good but the date code puts them at pre 2000 and probably late 1995 production so they would be ok for display but should be replaced for driving. The car has a clear Washington title and comes with a spare tire and a bottle jack in the trunk.

The Jaguar is overall good condition. We recommend new tires and reconditioning the brakes. This car has been part of a large private collection since 2011 when it was acquired from the original owner who kept it for 38 years.

Car now offered at:

www.hemmings.com/auction/1973-jaguar-xj6-san-antonio-tx-277580

Seller's description:

Vehicle Location San Antonio, Texas 78248

VIN UD1L72326BW

Odometer 28,196

Engine 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six

Transmission Automatic

Exterior Color Fern Gray

Interior Red leather

Seller Private

Auction Type Reserve

This Fern Gray over red leather 1973 Jaguar XJ6 Sedan is described by its seller as a two-owner car with its original paint, showing just 28,196 miles on the odometer. He notes that the Jaguar is “running and was maintained” but says that he has not driven it in “quite some time,” so it will likely need service.

POWERTRAIN

Power comes from Jaguar’s XK 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six, which was factory rated at 150 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 213 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. A three-speed Borg-Warner Model 12 automatic transmission routes engine output to the rear wheels.

According to the seller, the powerplant is original to the car, starts right up from cold, and exhibits neither leaks nor weeps. Moreover, the transmission is said to “shift perfectly.”

EXTERIOR

Finished in Fern Gray with an abundance of sparkling chrome accents, the Jag’s curvaceous bodywork is stated to be “blemish free.” No paint bubbles, cracks, or body rust are cited—neither are any chips or dents. The seller proclaims the paint both “looks to be in great shape” and, as previously noted, is original to the car.

Glass and windows are characterized as all being “in good shape” and the same is said of the body seals, with the seller testifying to the sedan’s leak-free integrity. As for the exterior lighting instruments, he says, “everything works.”

INTERIOR

The red leather interior possesses a decided patina of age. The driver’s seat shows a few scratches and what could be considered normal wear. After all, it is 50 years old and avowed to be original to the car.

The seller discloses a bit of carpet wear on the driver’s side but says it “looks new otherwise.” He classifies the headliner’s condition as “looking good” and purports all interior trim to be intact. Instrumentation is rated as functional, as are the audio system, power windows, and power door locks. Heat and A/C are verified to be operational.

CHASSIS

DOT codes indicating the age of the tires aren’t legible in the accompanying photographs. However, the chrome wheels and hubcaps do show quite well in the images. Steering is held to be aligned with no play, and the hydraulics of power steering system are reported to be free of leaks. Bushing and shocks, according to the seller, “work fine” and the brake pedal is declared to be “neither too soft nor too firm.”

DOCUMENTATION

The seller states this vehicle will be sold on a clean Texas title in his name. He describes the car as running and maintained, but after a period of rest, perhaps in need of maintenance or service. Beyond that though, this 1973 Jaguar XJ6 appears to be a very nice car in the photos provided. As described in Road & Track, “The Jaguar’s styling, inside and out, is masterful—combining elegance, graciousness, and sportiness in a way absolutely no other car even approaches.”
