This 1984 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas was purchased new from Hornburg Jaguar of Los Angeles, California and was acquired by the seller from the second owner in 2000. Subsequent refurbishment work included a 2007 repaint in Antelope metallic, recent replacement of its 4.2-liter inline-six and three-speed automatic transmission with those from a 1987 model, re-dying of the Doeskin Connolly leather interior, refurbishment of the engine bay, and replacement of the brakes, suspension, and more. The car features factory mud guards, Cibie fog lamps, and an aftermarket stereo along with Vanden Plas-specific interior trim such as burl walnut trim, plush floor mats, and swiveling reading lamps. This Series III XJ6 is offered with manufacturer’s literature, service records from new, a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, trophies from the Jaguar Clubs of North America Concours d’Elegance, a clean Carfax report, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The car was refinished in Antelope metallic in 2007 following removal of rust and door dings according to the seller, who also notes that the bumper trim was rechromed. Equipment includes Cibie fog lamps, European-spec 7″ headlamps, and factory mud guards.
Stock 15″ Kent wheels are mounted with Pirelli P4 tires showing 2018 date codes. The brake fluid was replaced along with the front pads and rotors in 2019, while a suspension overhaul in 2018 included replacement of the front shock absorbers and upper mounts along with the front subframe bushings. A vibration in the brake pedal is noted when applied at high speeds.
The cabin is upholstered in Doeskin Connolly leather and features burl walnut trim on the dash and doors, plush floor mats, and swiveling rear reading lamps specific to Vanden Plas models. Equipment includes power-adjustable front seats, electric windows, a power sunroof, cruise control, automatic climate control, a digital trip computer, and a protective inner trunk cover. The seller states that he has installed a new headliner and re-dyed the interior leather surfaces, also replacing some of the trim with new old-stock material.
Instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges which are shown during a cold start in the video above. The six-digit odometer reads just under 200k miles, 104k of which were added by the seller in 19 years. A new old-stock walnut dash panel is said to have been installed in 2011.
The replacement fuel-injected 4.2-liter DOHC inline-six was sourced from a 1987 XJ6 and is said to have been cleaned and inspected prior to installation in 2018. A valve adjustment and fuel injector service were carried out along with replacement of the belts, hoses, fluids, and seals. Two aftermarket filters were added between the dual fuel tanks and changeover valve. A re-cored radiator was fitted in 2019 as well as a new battery and thermostat.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed Borg-Warner 66 automatic transmission which was taken from the engine donor and received a band adjustment before installation. The seller notes corrosion on the exhaust pipes and muffler along with oil and transmission fluid leaks evident when the car sits overnight.
The November 2019 Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage in California from February 1994 through a successful California emissions inspection in April 2019.
Trophies awarded in the Driven and Champion Division classes of the Jaguar Clubs of North America Concours d’Elegance.
The car is supplied with manufacturer’s literature, two sets of keys, two fog lamp covers, a factory spare wheel and jack, the removed factory stereo, service records dating to 1984, and a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate showing a build date of February 3, 1984.
