While Sir William Lyons preferred Sable, in the 1970s Jaguar also experimented with less mud-themed colours, such as the lovely Lavender Blue of this car. Available for only three years, from 1973 to 1976, XJC Register records show that only 19 buyers chose this distinctive colour for RHD Jaguar XJCs. Here is one of them.

Beyond that rarity, this tidy XJC merits attention for its highly original dark blue leather cabin and good overall condition. It features a set of period Wolfrace Slotmags, but is otherwise standard. It has been part of the current keeper’s large marque collection since 1981. The history file indicates very sparing use since the 1990s, suggesting the low displayed mileage of 64,000 could be correct, although this isn’t verified. Since purchase the car has been part of a large collection of treasured cars from a serious and reportedly picky lifelong Jaguar collector who owned over 100 of what we are told were the finest examples. This car is one of the last three to be sold.

Despite very limited use over recent years, the car has a useful voluntary MOT to September 2026 with no advisories. The vendor includes invoices showing over £2,500 at Classics Engineering in 2025 to ensure that the car is in good condition for the next keeper. This work included attention to the carburettor and fuel systems plus a new set of plugs and a battery. The vendor says the car is fully ready for the buyer to use.

The XJC was a passion project for Lyons and the last Jaguar to benefit from his in-depth involvement. These are rare, beautiful and highly usable cars that enthusiasts are increasingly appreciating. Here is a chance to buy one of the rarest available.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
