This 1972 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 shows 36k miles and remained in single-family ownership before it was acquired by the selling dealer in 2026. Power comes from a 4.2-liter inline-six paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, and the car is finished in Sable Brown over tan leather. Features include four-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes, 15″ chrome wheels, power steering, and power windows. The selling dealer mounted the white-stripe tires, converted the air conditioning system to R134a, rebuilt both carburetors, and replaced both fuel tanks, the fuel pump and filler neck, fluids, and the spark plugs. This XJ is offered by the selling dealer with an owner’s manual, the January 1972 warranty registration card, service records, a tool kit, and transferable New York registration.

The Series 1 XJ was introduced in 1968 and carried over the Mark X’s independent rear suspension along with the XK-series engines, with a new entry-level 2.8L displacement offered. This example is finished in Sable Brown with chrome trim and has twin fuel‑filler doors, a power antenna, and dual exhaust outlets that exit beneath the rear valance.

The 15″ chrome wheels were mounted with 205/70 Travelstar tires in April 2026. The car is equipped with power‑assisted four-wheel disc brakes and power steering. The suspension was refreshed in 1998 at ~33k miles.

The cabin features tan leather upholstery on the seats and door panels, while the black dashboard is accented with wood veneer. Amenities include power windows, ashtrays, an AM/FM stereo, and a locking glove box, and the selling dealer converted the air conditioning system to utilize R134a refrigerant in preparation for the sale.

A wood‑rimmed Moto‑Lita steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 140‑mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,000‑rpm redline. Auxiliary gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, battery voltage, and fuel level are housed in the center stack along with a clock. The five‑digit odometer shows 36k miles.

The 4.2‑liter inline‑six was factory rated at 157 horsepower and 240 lb‑ft of torque when new, and power is delivered to the rear wheels through a three‑speed Borg‑Warner automatic transmission. Work in April 2026 involved rebuilding both carburetors in addition to replacing both fuel tanks, the fuel pump and filler neck, fluids, and the spark plugs.

The January 1972 warranty registration card and owner’s manual are displayed above.

The registration uses the VIN 1L64524BW as stamped on the body plate. The transferable registration acts as proof of ownership in the state of New York.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
