Ebay item 7/26/11

Car has a buy it now price of $8,250 for 16 days.

Sellers description:
1974 Jaguar XJ 12L Series II Sedan V8 conversion

This is a Series II Jaguar Sedan and the "L" means it is the longer car with more leg room in the rear seat.

This car was converted to a Chevrolet 400 cid V8 about 1985 or 86.

The conversion was done by Jim Johnson, the founder of Suncoast conversions, back in the day when he actually did the conversions as opposed to selling kits. This car was built for my Father is still owned by my Father. Dad drives the car about for one week but I told him it has to go because I can't keep maintaining it for so little use.

Driveline
The engine was built for the car, with a high torque cam shaft and now fitted with a quadrajet carb. The engine is mated to a Turbo-hyrdomatic 400 with a Gear Changers electric over drive. The rear was rebuilt and fitted with Gleason Torsen rear differential. These differentials are not available to the aftermarket any more they only sell them to OEM for high performance use. The net effect is this rear gives performance way beyond any limited slip, as a matter of fact, the inside tire will chirp going around a turn almost like a welded rear.

How does it run? The car has barely been used for a decade and should be fully serviced and checked. It needs time to warm-up and get fully functional with the old style V8 and carb but it is a hoot to drive. The Chevy engine is so much lighter than the Jaguar V12 and the car steers light as a feather. Not only is it responsive to steering input but it responds real well to the throttle. You can chirp the tires off the line with no effort and even chirp them when it changes gears while in motion. This is the car to drive looking for guys in AMG Mercedes or M BMW's because they won't pay any attention to you and by the time they understand what is happening you are gone.

Cosmetics
Body work and paint was done some time in the 1990's. The car was repainted in the original dark blue. The paint looks great although a good detailing would be helpful.

The car is fitted with BBS honeycomb wheels that are painted to match the body. The tires are in very good condition.

The interior is fair. The leather is getting dry and needs a good treatment to soften it. The front seats have very plush real shearling covers and they look great and probably cost a fortune new but I did not peek under them to see the condition of the leather. The dashboard was replaced with a fabulous burled wood dash that looks fantastic. A great Nardi steering wheel is also fitted.

The appearance under the hood is not so good. Back in the day they couldn't get a proper fitting aftermarket air cleaner so it has some junkyard special air cleaner that looks horrible. The engine compartment is a dirty mess and needs a complete detailing. Also, the valve covers appear to be leaking. The underside of the hood looks nasty because the insulation is missing. Overall the car needs a complete detailing especially under the hood.

The problems
So far the car is pretty good but in the name of complete disclosure it does have some gremlins. Most of the car's problems appear to relate to the wonderful world of Jaguar electronics in the 1970's.

The AC and heat controls do not work. As far as I can tell and I'm neither a mechanic nor have I spent a lot of time on this, the AC works and the heat works but the controls do not. You seem to have heat at full blast or nothing or if something is set accordingly in the system by a technician, AC at full blast or nothing. My Jaguar mechanic said they couldn't fix these units when they were new and there is no point in trying to fix this one now. Some Street Rod aftermarket controls are now called for.

The very pretty Nardi steering wheel that is fitted does not have a working horn button. Another horn button is added under the dash.

The aftermarket Alpine stereo (with in trunk CD changer) of 1980's vintage doesn't appear to work too well. It has one of those detachable faces and it may be malfunctioning.

The electric windows are a bit iffy with the right rear window not working at all.

Forget the central door locks. They don't work.

The car is prewired for the XM radio add on unit. But I don't know of those are still made or if the old ones still work with the reformulated XM/Sirius.

Both sun visors are off the car and can be found in the trunk.

Conclusion
This car really doesn't need much cosmetically and it runs pretty damn well. But, it will require some attention to the electronics and detailing.

The car is inspected through the end of this year and may be seen and driven in Allentown, PA.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
